Inocencio Duarte Varine, one of the first Mozambicans to graduate with a BTh from GWC, recently became the first Bishop of REACH Mozambique, on the 7th of July 2024. His consecration was officiated by Dr Siegfreid Ngubane (Chancellor of GWC and Presiding Bishop of REACH) while Inocencio’s mentor, Rev. Dr David Seccombe, most appropriately preached the consecration sermon from Acts 20.
It was both an international and African celebration, with various leaders attending from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, DRC, Australia and South Africa. In a warm fraternal fellowship, the Bishops from the Anglican Province of Mozambique and Angola attended to celebrate with us on this historic occasion. The Mozambican government was also represented by sending the National Director of Religious Affairs.
Under God, Inocencio and Alexandria have planted over 40 churches in Mozambique since graduating from GWC. A key instrument, throughout his years in ministry, has been the Explore Distance Learning Course. In addition to this, Inocencio has developed a certificate level Bible College in Maputo, called Colégio de Formação em Liderança Bíblica. This NQF Level 4 Course is a Portuguese translation of the Johannesburg Bible College (JBC) curriculum. Five full-time students registered in 2024 and we are praying for ten students in 2025. This is an interdenominational college teaching clear reformed theology and praxis, appropriately contextualised for a Portuguese speaking Mozambique.
As part of a developing partnership between GWC and Mozambique we recently welcomed our first Mozambican student, Manuel Malinga, to our Higher Certificate in Theology. If you’re interested in supporting this collaboration please consider donating money towards bursaries affording Mozambican students the opportunity to study at GWC in 2026.
Lastly we would ask that you please pray with us for Mozambique, as only in recent history has there been relative freedom for the Gospel to grow, that many churches and Christian organisations throughout Mozambique will be blessed by Inocencio and Alexandria’s ministry.
