GWC’s Master of Theology degree programme is registered under the South African Qualifications Authority ID 101609, NQF Level 9, and is offered on campus and online.

Aim

The GWC Master’s degree deepens and enriches your knowledge in a specialty area that you choose. It gives you a cutting-edge knowledge of a particular field and equips you for leadership as a specialist in the church and in broader society. Many people choose to study a Master’s as part of ongoing professional education, enriching their work and opening doors for new opportunities. Others use it to prepare for teaching or writing ministries, preparing the way for PhD study.

CONTENT

COURSEWORK OPTION

The coursework option is for you if you are looking for a challenging and enriching programme that will develop the professional and leadership skills required for gospel ministry. This option consists of five modules, including one on specialist research skills, and a 25,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice.

The modules are delivered by a combination of GWC’s own faculty and guest lecturers who are specialists in their fields from other parts of South Africa and the world. The dissertation is written under the personal guidance of a specialist in your chosen field.

FULL DISSERTATION OPTION

The full-dissertation option is for you if you are wanting to develop specialist research and writing skills. This option consists of one module on specialist research skills, and a 50,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice.

The programme provides you the opportunity to undertake a major research project and to develop the skills required to design research, think critically about methodology and the history of thought, and to present your results. It is written under the personal guidance of a specialist in your chosen field and will prepare you for a ministry in writing, leadership, teaching, or research.

DURATION OF STUDY

The GWC Master’s degrees are two years full time or three years part time. It is possible to extend this for longer periods if required.

Outcomes

The GWC Master’s degree equips you with the necessary knowledge, research skills and applied competence within a specialised field of study in order to act as leaders, educators and facilitators in your church denomination and in society at large. You will develop competence in your discipline and self-motivation, you will be able to analyse and interpret relevant Christian sources, critically evaluate and apply Christian theology and ethics in an appropriate manner, participate confidently in discussion and research into relevant issues and problems, and report their findings clearly in written and oral form.

Completion of the GWC Master’s degree meets the minimum entrance required for admission into a PhD programme in South Africa.

Entrance Requirements

GWC BThHons degree (or equivalent as determined by the Faculty Board).

International applicants require an evaluation of their highest qualification from the SA Qualifications Authority; as well as proof of English language proficiency through the IELTS test (6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element) or TOEFL (computerised 232/575; internet based 90/91). Applications for exemption from the testing can be made (with appropriate motivation) to the Faculty Board, whose decision is final. Further details may be obtained from the Assistant Registrar.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Foreign students who have English as a second language may be required to complete a TOEFL Test (or similar) to prove proficiency in English at a level suitable for academic study.

English language requirement: You must have an English Language qualification to be accepted onto a course at the University. The minimum acceptable English Language requirement for undergraduate courses is IELTS – 6.0 overall and 5.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 213 in the computerised TOEFL test, 550 in the written TOEFL test, or 79 – 80 in the internet based TOEFL test.

For postgraduate courses you must have IELTS – 6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 232 in the computerised TOEFL test, 575 in the written TOEFL test or 90 – 91 in the internet based TOEFL test. Equivalent English language qualifications may be accepted.
