Teaching and learning for higher theological education (TALHITE)
Theological Education Development Services (TEDS) provides training in learning, teaching, and curriculum development for theological institutions. TALHITE is an online, professional development course for theological educators who are already engaged in teaching and learning in their institutions. This short course is certified by George Whitefield College in South Africa.
OVERVIEW OF TALHITE ONLINE
Phase 1: Initial workshop (40 student hours)
A five-day course of online, real-time, interactive Zoom sessions. This phase includes self-instructional materials and aims to build competencies in teaching practice for theological education.
Areas of focus: Key Theological Dimensions; the Reflective Practitioner; Constructing Learning for Active Student Engagement.
Phase 2: The Teaching Lab (During term-time)
This phase consists of active learning through classroom practice over one term, based in the lecturer’s normal teaching situation.
Participants evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching, identify issues of student learning in context and compile a Personal Learning portfolio.
Phase 3: Deepening workshop (40 student hours)
This five-day course consists of more interactive, real-time Zoom sessions and self-instructional online materials.
Its purpose is to engage participants in their own professional development in becoming reflective practitioners and valuable resource people who enrich the quality of learning at an institutional level.
Areas of focus: Biblical Philosophy of Theological Education; Advancing Student Learning Capacities; Leadership for quality in higher education.
Introducing the TEDS facilitators
Rev Dr Richard Seed (Dick)
Born in South Africa, Richard (Dick) Seed was ordained in 1981 and pastored churches in Cape Town, Zimbabwe, UK and Germany. He studied theology in South Africa and then did an MEd (Oxford) and PhD (Birmingham UK) with a focus on theological education. He has served with the Church Missionary Society as a theological educator for 2 decades. He has been Director of studies (Nigeria), Principal (Rwanda), Consultant (Ghana), Learning Advisor (Kenya). Dick has been a visiting lecturer at St Paul’s University, and curriculum consultant for Uganda Christian University amongst others.
He currently serves on faculty at George Whitefield College (GWC) in Cape Town and directs Theological Development Services (TEDS) – the professional and continuing education and training arm there. He provides theological education consultancy to various christian and mission organisations. He has published in the areas of culture, learning and mission. Dick is married to Caroline and they have three adult children and five grandchildren.
Dr Caroline Seed
Born in the UK, Caroline grew up in Southern Africa where she trained
as a secondary teacher. Caroline taught English and French both in South Africa and in the UK where she also had administrative responsibility for a year group. In Germany she taught and administered English language courses for adults. Before joining Church Mission Society in 2000, she did a Masters in Mission. She later did an MTh (Wales) and a PhD in Dogmatics (South Africa). Caroline has taught Theology and languages extensively in Africa. She has been Women’s Warden (Nigeria), Academic Dean (Rwanda), Registrar (Ghana) and Director of Academic Affairs and acting Principal (Kenya). She has published in the area of history and missions.
Caroline currently serves on faculty at George Whitefield College in Cape Town. She is also a training facilitator for TEDS, and a postgraduate supervisor at various national and international universities.
Mrs Karen Roe
Born in Australia, Karen grew up in Adelaide where she trained as a secondary teacher following her studies in psychology, history and languages. After further studies in Germany, she taught in a Christian college for 5 years where she was also department head and co-led a student tour to Germany. She is co-author for German textbook ‘Genau’ and co-translator of Volker Leppin’s book Martin Luther: A late Medieval Life. In 2006, Karen married Mike and together they prepared for missionary service. Studies in Theology, TESOL, cross-cultural service followed, as well as teaching English to adults; both in the private sector, as well as via cross-cultural University ministry. In 2016-2019, Karen, Mike – and their 2 children (Amelia and Mitchell) – served in Namibia with the Church Missionary Society, where she taught Academic English and mentored women.
Based in Cape Town at GWC since 2020, she completed her Master of Education in 2023 and currently serves with The Theological Development Services (TEDS) as training facilitator and administrative support.
